In Lubbock, the School of Medicine has joined with Lubbock IMPACT and Lubbock Ambulance to open the TTUHSC/Lubbock IMPACT Free Clinic. The clinic is open from 6 to 9 p.m. https://ameblo.jp/syvesfari1981/entry-12634916751.html. Every Wednesday and is staffed by 10 to 12 medical students and three to four volunteer TTUHSC physicians.
The clinic serves 15 to 20 people each week. The clinic staff provides free primary health care - sometimes to people who have not seen a doctor in years - and volunteers are available to help patients apply for assistance programs such a Blue Card or Medicaid. Brian Mahmood, a second-year medical student, said he and his peers were inspired to establish the clinic after a class project. 'We were really called to action when we visited the homeless and found out how badly they needed access to some primary care outside of the ER,' Mahmood said. In Amarillo, pharmacy students recently volunteered their time to provide free screening services to the homeless at Tyler Street Resource Center. Students performed screenings for cholesterol and glucose for more than 100 people and also conducted blood pressure checks.
Jared Gower, a second-year pharmacy student, said participating in the screening event made him realize how many people in the West Texas community need better health care, and that health care professionals can make a difference. 'It was amazing to see how empowering it was to educate these people on ways to lower blood pressure or cholesterol,' Gower said. 'It was almost as if we were giving them a feeling of control over something, where they may have very little (control) over other things.'

Member Spotlight:Dianna just recently started at the UMC Activities Center, because she wanted to add to her fitness routine. After taking Tai Chi classes, she found that her strength had increased, her stamina was greater, and she didn't have to work out at the gym as often.
She wants people to know that the people you meet in class are just like you, and that everyone feels like friends that are learning together to improve their fitness level. Her favorite thing about the UMC Activities Center is how friendly and welcoming the environment is. 'It's a nice place to go, and I love it!' Thanks Dianna, keep up the good work!
